It seems like some sort of sick joke:  the government is keeping innocent people (by which I mean detainees that have been determined by the U.S. military to not be "enemy combatants") in Guantanamo.

Especially when (and here's the "sick joke" part) the rationale for keeping them in Gitmo (a place that the UN is urging be shut down, alleging systematic torture) is human rights.  Yep, the government has determined that these innocent people "face harsh treatment" if they return to their home countries.  So they continue to rot in Guantanamo...where they face harsh treatment.
