Well, I'm stuck at work for midnight tonight, but there's no reason you can't go out and have a good time. Go watch them drop something. If you can't go see the crystal ball in Times Square, check out the Peach Drop in Atlanta, the Acorn Drop in Raleigh, the Big Orange Drop in Miami, or the Pickle Drop in Mount Olive, NC.
My favorite? In Lebanon, PA, they're dropping a six-foot-long bologna....and in nearby Cleona, they're dropping a two-foot-wide pretzel. (The state capital, Harrisburg, is dropping a cow painted to look like a strawberry.) But they really pull out the drops in Key West, where there are not one, not two, but three drops: a pirate "wench", a conch shell, and a drag queen named Sushi, who will descend in an eight-foot-long red high-heeled shoe.
(N.B.: I've been to Times Square, the Acorn Drop, and the Peach Drop. I still hope to make it to the Bologna Drop someday.)
ADDENDUM: In the MeFi thread I posted, Amberglow points out that in Brasstown, NC, they drop a possum. That beats 'em all.
The only thing I'm going to drop is my head onto my pillow! Hope you have a good night at work, friend, and a happy new year ahead.

Another New Years' Eve worker? You poor, savage bastard. All the best in the Ought-Four.
(p.s. didja ever send out that swap CD and/or get mine? just curious... damn the vaguaries of snail mail.)
(is 'vaguaries' even a word?)
